Instructions for Sending your Nose strut in for modification to comply with Van's Service Bulletin SB07-11-9.
Our instructions have recently changed, so please read carefully:
When Removing your gear leg from your airplane, you should under no circumstances use any type of wrench on the gear leg shaft to obtain leverage to be able to twist it out of the mount. For example a pipe wrench or channel lock pliers or similar. If you can not get it out of the engine mount with your bare hands and need extra leverage, you can put a shaft of some sort (Like an extension for a 1/2" ratchet set, or a long bolt) up inside the 0.875 hole in the end of the axle as a 'cheater bar' of sorts.
You should expect the time in our shop to be about 1 week. We try our best to get it updated and shipped out for the next day, but that does not always happen.
The rethreading is done with a carbide thread milling tool running in a CNC mill. If you have access to a CNC mill, you can do this yourself. Cutter cost and set up will only cost about $600.00 or so. Otherwise, follow the directions below and we will get it done for you!!
(If you do not follow
these simple instructions, you lose. If you follow these instructions to the
letter, you win, and the job gets done in an orderly time frame.)
1 - Remove all hardware and brackets from your gear leg. We don't need them and it is likely they will get beat up or lost during shipping if they are included. If you have fairings that are bonded on, you do not need to remove them. If you do remove them, however, be sure not to cut into the gear leg, you could ruin it!!
2 - Get a piece of plywood from Home Depot or wherever (3/8" or thicker) and cut a piece 48"x6" and strap your gear leg to it using .040 safety wire or better. (Plastic zip ties and smaller safety wire DO NOT hold up. They will break and your gear leg will get damaged and/or lost in shipping)
3 - Print and
fill out the order form below with correct addresses, home & shipping addresses
and phone #’s where you can be reached.
4 - Secure this information to the board using plenty of strong tape, in a zip lock baggie you’ve stolen
from the kitchen. Be sure the gear leg is secured properly. (we drill
small holes and fasten the gear leg to the board with safety wire in about 5
places so it
can’t move around.) Then wrap it with cardboard or find a cardboard box it will
all fit in. If anything rattles when you shake it, it is not secure enough.
5 - Write your name and address on the box top with a permanent marker, so we
don’t lose it in our shop.
6 - Send it to us UPS or how ever else you like.
7 - Enclose a check made out to Langaire Aircraft Parts LLC for $200 (Sorry, we do not accept Credit Card payments). ($155 for the work, and $45 for shipping and handling.) We only use UPS and will use UPS Ground
unless you specify in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS box below that you want something
else, AND you have already talked to us about your special needs. (If you
live outside the continental 48 states, you should contact us to get an estimate
on return shipping and handling costs.)
8 - Secure this beautiful box with strapping tape so that nothing falls out.
9 - If we have already talked to you about your gear leg and you needed something extra besides getting it cut off and re-thread, include that information in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS box at the bottom (ie: you have tried to fix it yourself and were unsucessful).
